Tao of politics

Taoism is symbolized by the Yin-Yang.  A joining of opposite forces in a swirling pattern, the positive and the negative, but there also is a dot of the opposite in each.  A positive in the negative and a negative in the positive.  Why would these dots be there?  From what little I know about the Tao it is to represent something bad can come out of something good and something good can come out of something bad.  Sounds a little paradoxical, but let me explain my logic.

Something bad come out of something good?  That would be hubris or the saying no good deed goes unpunished.  Examples would be the anti-abortion movement.  They believe they are fighting the good fight because they are saving babies, but they don’t figure in other factors.  They don’t think about the mother’s life or the baby was conceived by rape or incest.  Other examples are the Reagan revolution where cutting government programs will help the people because money will trickle down, thou it never will.

Something good come out of something bad?  That would be non-violent revolutions like the color revolutions like the Yellow Revolution in the Philippines around 1986 that took Marcos out of power or the Bulldozer Revolution in Yugoslavia in 2000.

Now lets look at the USA with the current political climate.  Since Donald Trump taking office has made some historically bad decisions.  I believe in his mind he is doing something good only it is doing something bad.  From something bad the people are rising up to stop him.  I am glad this is being done from day one because this is the good that is coming out of something bad.  This is USA’s color revolution.

Let’s Recall…the 2016 Presidential Election.

Jill Stein has been raising money for a recount in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.  The current electoral votes are Trump’s 290 to Clinton’s 232.  The electoral votes for the three states are as follows:

  • Michigan: 16
  • Wisconsin: 10
  • Pennsylvania: 20

So what if the recall over turns all three states from Trump to Clinton the total will be as follows:

  • Clinton – 278
  • Trump – 260

That is more then the electoral votes then on election night.  (That’s a big if.)  What after the recalls only some of the states changed to Clinton.  She would need to win all 3.  The break down with her winning only 2 of the 3 states would be following.

Clinton wins MI and WI

  • Clinton – 258
  • Trump – 280

Clinton wins PA and MI

  • Clinton – 268
  • Trump – 270

Clinton wins PA and WI

  • Clinton – 262
  • Trump – 276

Now look at the popular vote totals right now are

  • Clinton – 62,523,126
  • Trump – 61,201,031

That is a narrow margin with is why we need to get rid of the archaic system of the electoral college.  To do that will require an amendment that with a 2/3 majority in both the house and senate and then 3/4 of the states.  With the Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, so they won’t pass it.

There is a campaign to change that with in the Constitution called the National Popular Vote that changes the electoral vote to be covered over the whole nations votes and not a winner take all of the states.  Check that out.

Yes I am a Slackivist and Other Political Views

I am a fan of Political Compass because it gives an in depth look into what your political stance is with a questionnaire that doesn’t let you choose “no position”.  Instead of using a single axis of Left and Right it uses two.  A left-right (Collectivims thru Neo-liberalism) economic x axis and an authoritarian-libertarian (Fascism thru Anarchy) social y axis.

Here is what I scored after taking the questionnaire.

Bill's Political Compass

I am Libertarian Left.  Which is odd because when I took it in the past I have been closer to the middle.  Now I am in my 40’s and it has drifted farther to the left instead of going right.  For one it might be that the political climate in the US has changed and went to the right and that I am rebelling against it in my own mind.  I know that it won’t always work, so I do try to be pragmatic, but I am lazy just posting my politics on Facebook. (a.k.a. Slacktivism)

I want to show the political compass for the 2016 US Presidential Candidates.

us2016

If you look at the Republican candidates and they are in the extreme corner of the Authoritarian Right. Hillary Clinton is in the Authoritarian Right but not to the extreme with the GOP.  This is why Republicans call everyone right of center of in the middle a liberal. Look at Bernie Sanders who is just left of center and they call him a Socialist when he is more of a Social Democrat like in Scandinavian countries.  That is how screwed up US politics is.  It is the conservative Democrats and the reactionary Republicans.

I wonder where it all went wrong?  I am a Gen X’er and grew up during Reaganomics.  Growing up I saw the slide of society turn to this pro-privatization neo-liberalism and the War on Drugs. (Which we are still fighting) In the 1992 when I was old enough to vote I wasn’t going to see another 4 years of George Bush/Day Quayle.  Voted for Bill Clinton and he did some positive thinks like rise taxes on the top tax bracket and rise the minimum wage.   He did setup some changes would make a turn to the worse.  First was the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and that shipped jobs to Mexico and created a series of free trade agreements that shipped jobs to other foreign countries.  Then there was the repeal of the Glass–Steagall Act that made the housing crisis of the early 21st Century.

Now how do we change it for the better?  One is supporting the Occupy Wall St. movement that is still going on.  There are many online efforts you can support.  Here are a few links.

#BernieHasAPosse

I was watching the Iowa Caucus and it was a nail biter.  I am a Bernie Sanders support and he had no superpac support or rich donors and trailed behind Hillary Clinton by 4/10 of a percent.  I would love if he won, but the presidential race isn’t a sprint but a marathon, and Bernie and Hillary broke from the pack.  He is on her heels and may over take the lead during Super Tuesday.  Only concern is accusation of Hillary changing the vote to her favor.  Bernie is a fighter and so is his posse and we will make sure this election is fair.  Because if it goes unchallenged then it is Florida in 2000 all over again where Al Gore decided to concede the election then staying in for the end and could of won.  The corruption in the US is getting worse.  This has to stop.  That’s why Bernie Has a Posse.
