My First Exposure to the KKK

With the KKK/Neo-Nazis violence in Charlottesville, VA, it got me thinking of the first time I heard of the Klan.  I was 7 years old watching TV and a news break comes on.  I thought, “Oh this should be over in a few minutes and the show I was watching would come back on.”  It wasn’t a short news break.  It went on longer than that.  I change the channel and on 3 major networks were reporting it.

What I was seeing was the Klan starting a riot.  They were dressed in black wearing motor cycle helmets, carrying round black shields with “KKK” in white emblazoned on them, and carrying clubs.  Then they showed other people against them dressed in normal clothing protesting.  I saw them taking one person injured and bloody being taken way by paramedics.  Then the police came and started shooting, andthat scared me.  I turned off the TV and did something else.  Came back to the TV and they were still talking about it.

This planted the notation that there were people in this world, adults, that are scary, and what to hurt others.  It also made me curious who they were and what they were about.  Over the years I would do some research, and it all painted it in a negative light.  This is why I am against the racism and a liberal.  Because a lot of right-wingers are BULLIES.
